I completed my Outdoor First Aid course yesterday. This is a requirement of being able to coach orienteering in the more interesting areas. It is the second time I have completed this course, the first being almost exactly three years earlier.
Key things to remember:
- D – Danger
- R – Response
- A – Airway
- B – Breathing
- C – Circulation
New resuscitation protocol is 30 compressions followed by two breaths. The compressions should be quite fast, i.e. faster than the normal “Staying Alive”.
The trainer suggested not giving mouth to mouth without any form of barrier to someone you didn’t know well.
Recovery position:
- S – Safe
- O – ?
- D – Draining
- A – Airway?
Try to get legs/body higher than head.
Stroke test:
- F – Face
- A – Arms
- S – Smile
- T – Time to ring 999
There was lots of other stuff that we covered, but those were probably the ones to remember, or were different.
